Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef or turkey for a leaner option
- 1 cup orzo pasta
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes
- 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley or basil for garnish
Instructions
- Start by gathering all your ingredients. Dice the onion, mince the garlic, and measure out the orzo pasta and spices.
- In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Season with salt, pepper, oregano, and basil. Remove excess fat if necessary.
- Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until fragrant and translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Stir in the diced tomatoes and broth. Bring to a simmer. Add the orzo pasta, ensuring it’s submerged in the liquid. Cover and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the orzo is tender and has absorbed most of the liquid.
- Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the top. Cover again and let it melt for 2-3 minutes. For a crispy topping, transfer everything to a baking dish and bake at 375°F (190°C) for an additional 10 minutes.
Notes
- Use freshly grated cheese for better melt and flavor enhancement.
- Add vegetables like spinach or bell peppers for extra nutrients.
- Customize herbs or spice blends to suit your taste preferences.
