A classic patty melt sandwich combining a juicy beef patty, melted cheese, caramelized onions, and toasted bread in a savory, satisfying meal.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Pickles for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  2. Form ground beef into 4 equal patties, season with salt and pepper.
  3. In the same skillet, cook beef patties over medium heat until cooked through, about 4 minutes per side.
  4. Place cooked patties on a plate. Spread butter on one side of each bread slice and toast in the skillet until golden brown.
  5. Assemble each sandwich with a beef patty, a slice of cheese, caramelized onions, and the toasted bread slices.
  6. Press and cook the assembled sandwiches in the skillet until cheese melts and bread is crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  7. Serve hot with pickles if desired.

Notes

  • Use high-quality ground beef for the best flavor.
  • Adjust caramelization time for sweeter onions.
