A delightful festive Christmas bread loaded with dried fruits and fragrant spices, baked to perfection and topped with a sprinkle of sugar, ideal for holiday mornings or special gatherings.

  • Total Time: 2 hours
  • Yield: 1 loaf

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup mixed dried fruits (raisins, cranberries, apricots)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and a teaspoon of sugar. Let sit until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add melted butter, eggs, remaining sugar, and vanilla to the yeast mixture. Stir well.
  3. Gradually add flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Fold in dried fruits evenly.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Punch down the dough and shape into a loaf.
  8. Transfer to a baking pan lined with parchment paper. Let rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown. Cool before dusting with powdered sugar.

Notes

  • You can substitute dried fruits with chopped nuts or fresh citrus zest for variation.
  • Ensure milk is warm but not hot to activate the yeast properly.
